Peppercorns, Sansho

Related to the Sichuan peppercorn, Sansho Japanese pepper (zanthoxylum piperitum) has a citrusy flavor and a similar numbing effect. These little green seed pods grow on the Japanese prickly ash, and are a classic flavoring for yakitori. Sansho is especially good with eel, since the effect on your tongue is electric!
